Coaching for Transformation:
Facilitating Personal and Social Change

Led by: Martha Lasley

Six consecutive Wednesdays, starting March 7, 2007 from 8 - 9:30 pm Eastern.

Leader Style:

I'm eager to share what I've learned about integrating NVC with professional coaching. I've taught hundreds of coaching courses, in person, by teleclass and on line with Capella University's MBA program. My passion is coaching visionaries, especially social activists, executive directors of nonprofits and NVC practitioners.

Course Objectives:

In this course, you’ll develop coaching skills to help clients connect with what is most alive in them to effect personal and social change. You'll help them connect with their deepest values and cultivate strategies that can really work to make the world a better place to live. In this course, you’ll help people clarify their values, purpose and vision, and explore the social change they wish to create. You will coach yourself and others to prioritize goals and take action on issues that matter most. Find new opportunities to build inner awareness, set stretch goals and have a positive impact on society.

Exploring passion and yearning, you'll help clients create an action plan that resonates with deep needs and core values. To assist you along the way, you’ll practice coaching using an NVC version of the GROW model, which is a tool for helping people build their awareness of needs, develop their unique skills and talents, and take responsibility in achieving a desired outcome. You’ll learn to coach people to discover strategies for meeting needs, without dictating, giving advice or disempowering the people you coach.

Learning Goals:

The following goals will guide your learning and work throughout this course.

  • Help clients articulate personal values, purpose, and vision to establish a foundation for a fulfilling life that energizes and motivates them.
  • Demonstrate the principles of effective coaching by working with other participants and peers to help them identify goals, deepen awareness of needs, explore options and create a plan for accomplishing those goals.
  • Assess your coaching skills and develop competencies to help you work with coachees to build awareness and take action based on needs.
  • Help clients connect with their inner power and identify personal resources that can help them achieve their vision.
  • Help people establish a personal leadership plan that is consistent with their values, purpose, and vision, and that makes it possible for them to create the social change they wish to see in the world.

Class Description:

This course is divided into 12 units with TeleClasses in weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and coaching practice in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Each module builds on the last, so I encourage you to participate every week. All of the work is optional, but I will support you in completing the field work so you get the most out of the course. All TeleClasses will be taped so that you can listen later if you miss, but learning from participation is ideal.

Although each unit is planned and structured, I'm well known for tossing the agenda and going with what's most alive!

Unit 1 - TeleClass: Introduction to Coaching for Transformation. Meet other participants and together we'll create an intentional learning community. Listen to a demonstration of coaching using the GROW model and practice asking questions that empower people to build awareness and take action.
