Faculty Retreat 2016Spacer-5x5.gifKansas Retreat 2016 Belma-Kim

In October, Leadership that Works’ faculty and staff gathered at a retreat center in Valley Falls, Kansas, USA. The 4-day gathering included group learning around power, privilege, rank and culture and how these dynamics inform us individually and collectively as trainers, coaches and facilitators. These pictures catch a glimpse of the fun and camaraderie our team enjoyed in beautiful, rural Kansas.

Coaching in Communities

Everyday Transcendence
by Jagruti Gala (Excerpt from article published in AI Practitioner)

I would like to share a story of this natural life-impulse for transcendence from an after-school community learning centre that I have founded and run in Vadodara, India. One of the faculty works extensively with the urban poor. She had a new group in her charge, children of rag-picker families who do not have well-built homes to live in. They live in ramshackle huts under trees amidst the refuse of the city all around them. During conversation she asked them, “What will make you happy? What will you love?” They said they would love to learn. She found herself promising them she would return the next day with learning materials.

That entire night she could not sleep, feeling overwhelmed with responsibility and challenged by the inhuman and very dirty environment.

Library for Transformation - Browse & Grow....

Our Library for Transformation is a free community resource that connects you with practical, substantive articles, videos and podcasts on hundreds of topics. The Library is a growing collection of educational, edgy and relevant resources, organized in 9 core categories.

Check out this month's library picks by Vikram Bhatt:

Library graphic "If transcendence is about the essential, about surpassing usual limits, about moving beyond the material issues – then I see each such moment as one of transcendence and an irreversible, indelible contribution to the transformational journey of the individual, in the direction of their choice. As these moments connect they begin to shape the “becoming”.

This quote is taken from the article, Everyday Transcendence by my colleague and friend Jagruti Gala. Her article demystifies transcendence and proposes that it can be more a part of our everyday lives than we imagine, and further, that an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) outlook enables that possibility. The above story of the children from Vadodara, India is a powerful example from this article.

Another article I found very interesting is Driving Change with Internal Coaching Programs, an overview of a new way of utilizing coaching to drive wide scale organizational change. It illustrates how training leaders to be internal coaches is a more scalable, sustainable and robust approach to driving change and improving performance than hiring external coaches

Finally, I encourage everyone to watch the TED talk video Designing for Generosity. Nipun Mehta explores the power of generosity and concepts of giftism and self-interest and their impact on our world.

3 New Programs to Grow Your Capabilities

We are excited to share our new course offerings!

If you convene meetings, the 3-day Facilitation that Works program will provide powerful facilitation tools and skill building opportunities. You’ll gain new tools to understand power dynamics, generate creative ideas, solve tough problems, and make decisions collaboratively.

If you are interested in deepening connections with your target audience, Lead Dynamic Teleclasses  is a graduate level 6-class series presented by senior faculty where you will focus on technique, reflection and practice to develop communication skills that forge deeper connections. The class focuses on skills related to teleclasses but has broad application.

To grow your coaching skillset, check out Embracing the Shadow: Transform your lost, ignored, or exiled parts into allies. This six-week course with Martha Lasley and Pernille Plantener offers an opportunity to build on NVC principles, explore new avenues for unleashing the power of empathy, and create opportunities for inner alignment. On top of this, you’ll learn how to connect with your wounded parts and create happier endings to your hard-to-heal experiences.

Words of WisdomAt Leadership that Works, we believe people have the freedom to choose how they respond. It’s why Freedom is one of our core principles. When we remember that people have the freedom to choose how they respond to circumstances, we free ourselves from judgement and taking responsibility for them. We honor their choices and create a space where powerful, respectful connection and cultural humility exist between us.

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." —Viktor E. Frankl

"The more I can make a person comfortable in their environment by taking my ego's hat off and leaving it at the door, then they can dive deep within themselves and we can pull out something interesting that people have never heard before. It's the stuff that's - that no one's ever heard before is really interesting." Pharrell Williams

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." Nelson Mandela
